THE ORIGIN OF THE DREAMCATCHER
Condensed version as told by
John Two-Hawks - Oglala Lakota Nation
Grandmother Spider saw that the young children were having bad dreams. So she went to the willow and asked for a strong beautiful branch. Then she went to wanbli (eagle) and asked for a powerful feather. She formed the branch into a circle and began to weave a web in the center. After the web was finished, she attached the eagle feather to the wooden frame at the bottom. In her wisdom she came to an old woman in a dream and gave her the dreamcatcher. She taught her of its meaning and use. She taught her that the dreamcatcher was to be hung over the sleeping place of the children, and that the good dreams which follow a straight path will slip through the hole in the center and settle into the sleeping child. She taught the old woman that the web would catch the bad dreams which had a crooked path, and that grandfather sun would burn them away in the morning. Any remaining bad dreams would turn into dew and trickle down the eagle feather to the earth. This was the lesson and power of the true dreamcatcher.
